I'm admitting that I've love playing, hearing and "doodling around" with music my whole life. At this point I've been around a few years.
As you read this blog, the word "doodling" has probably jumped out at you. What I mean, by doodling is to sit at your keyboard, or whatever instrument you play, and just let your ears and fingers guide you. I can hear your question now? "Don't I have to read notes and do what the music says?"
The answer is both No and Yes. If you are just starting out, "Doodling" is just what you want. Create your own sounds, with two or three (even 4 or 5 notes). Start with the idea that your are already a musician. This is the musical truth. We all have music within us, it just wants to come out. "Doodling" is the way to let it out.
As for the "yes", notes will be a part of your path when you are ready to use the written notation of the musical language. But, this is perhaps third or fourth item on your musical list. Number one is tuning your ears. Start to really listen to sounds around you. Use your voice to sing bits of what you hear. Run to your piano, and "doodle" out those first few notes. Here are a few suggestions:
Remember, " Musical Doodling" is about letting your "ears" guide your hands. I didn't put You Tube on this list because we want to awaken your musical self through your "ears".
I invite you to join me for some "doodling" in my Summer Beginner Blues Piano Magic camp. You'll be learning to listen and play. Blues piano is a wonderful starter for learning to create and express your musical self.
Please email me at [email protected]. Subject Line: I'm ready for "Blues Piano Magic Camp.
I look forward to hear from you. Let me know how you're "Doodling"along.
Let's Play,
Ruth
P. S. Here's a bit of a " Musical Doodle" I created some years ago. I even gave it a name: Dance, Play and Sparkle

Here are a few suggestions:
- Commercial jingles
- Grocery jingles( they play music to get customers to buy more. I've learned quite a few tunes this way)
- Doodle out those children's songs you already know
- Start finding your favorite tunes on your instrument
